Who (& Where) We Are
Mayne Island is situated in the Southern Gulf Islands of British Columbia, Canada, between the "Lower Mainland" around the City of Vancouver and Vancouver Island and only a few minutes north of the maritime border between Canada and the U.S.A. The other major islands in the group include Galiano, The Penders, Saturna and Saltspring. The 1½ hour ferry ride from the mainland terminus of Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay - on the non-stop route from Vancouver to Victoria, B.C. - takes passengers through Active Pass between Galiano & Mayne. Mayne is served by the
BC Ferries "Southern Gulf Islands" route on which Village Bay is the second stop on the trip from Tsawwassen to Saltspring. The Gulf Island ports are also served by ferries out of Swartz Bay.
The full time resident population is around 1000 and the people count rises to three times this figure on a busy summer weekend. Fortunately, the vast majority of full and part time residents, and visitors, are respectful of the environment and the natural beauty of the island. Nonetheless, Mayne is distinguished amongst the island chain in having the least amount of land in public hands. The Mayne Island Conservancy Society was founded in order to advocate for the conservation and preservation, and promote the "Stewardship", of Mayne Island's diverse and sensitive ecological heritage.
